Red Kangaroos are found in Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. There are 47 varieties of Kangaroos in the world. They range greatly in size with some of them weighing two pounds. The Red Kangaroos are the biggest of all of them.
These animals usually have only one juvenile at a time, but they are able to mate annually. The young Red Kangaroo is called "joey" and is born very immature. That is why it needs to stay in its mother's pouch for a period of 6-7 months after birth. After the joey leaves the pouch, it stays with mother in a herd for a long period of time.
These animals have their own unique characteristics. These are the fastest of mammals. They move by hopping on their powerful legs. The thick long tail is used as a balancing mechanism for the body while hopping. When you see them, their looks make you think of them as if they have got the world's troubles on their shoulders.
In comparison with other Kangaroos such as the Grey, for example, the Reds lack the "bulbous" forehead that the Greys possess. Also, they have a wider face and nose; they are thicker set in the hands and feet; they have shorter fingernails; and their coat is thinner. There is one habit that is especially unique to Red Kangaroos and that is that they lie down stretched out on their backs, usually with their feet in the air. That really makes Red Kangaroos look funny.
